Founder's Story

My name is Dominic, and the story of Suwannee River Farms began the day my son and nephew were born. Those moments changed everything. After a successful career as a finance director in Long Island New York, I realized I wanted something more genuine and meaningful for my family’s future. Alongside my brother-in-law Steve and our tight-knit family, we left our careers, sold our homes, and relocated to Florida to build a healthier, more grounded life. The First thing we noticed after moving was Florida’s salad options were terrible. Finding fresh, quality lettuce and leafy greens was surprisingly difficult. This is not what we were accustomed to. Most leafy greens in Florida are imported long distances, lacking freshness, consistency, and not having the proper nutrition. Having a young family, nutrition and food quality is a major priority. Getting children to eat healthily can be a challenge with a flavorless wilted product. Instead of settling for subpar options, we decided to fix the problem ourselves. Initially, we explored aquaponics, planning to raise fish and use their waste as fertilizer to cultivate lettuce. While promising at first, consultations revealed that the necessary chemicals and pesticides were highly toxic, clashing with our values and resulting in a inferior product similar to field grown. That’s when Steve discovered controlled environment agriculture (CEA) a way to grow pesticide-free salads locally, year-round, and far superior in both taste and nutrition. Suwannee River Farms was born from two dads seeking better produce for their families and our desire to provide our community with the freshest, safest, and most sustainable salads possible. Suwannee River Farms represents the future of local food production—where technology meets agriculture to create a more reliable, sustainable food system.
